Ugly Alert: K-Actor Photoshoots Gone Wrong III–Fugly Hats Edition

It’s been awhile since I put one of these puppies together, and since I’m experiencing a bout of blogging inertia, the time is right for a photo-heavy, text-light and hopefully laugh-laden post 😀

I don’t keep up with fashion trends, but I do remember when there seemed to be a spate of K-actors wearing very large hats and thinking, good lord that’s big.

Jung Kyung Ho’s had bad luck with hats. It hasn’t turned for the better:

Writing Fanfiction: A Conversation With Mywebfoot on Writing, Shipping and Publishing, Plus a Chance to Win Her New eBook!

TFG1I’m always thinking of ways to try new things with the blog, so I’m hugely excited to share this Q&A with Mywebfoot, a fanfic writer I got to know of by stalking lurking on The Master’s Sun threads during that hit drama’s run last year.

Mywebfoot’s series of So Ji Sub and Gong Hyo Jin couple fanfics called That Far Gone sent plenty of shipping hearts a flutter (including mine) with her witty and descriptive scenes written in So Ji Sub’s voice telling of a deepening relationship between the actors on the TMS set. The actors’ crackling chemistry on and off-screen played a major part in my enjoyment of the show and is largely why the SoGong couple as they’ve been named, has a legion of dedicated and loyal fans.

Spurred by the popularity of her series, Mywebfoot decided to expand those chapters into a full-length eBook now available for sale. She’s also very kindly made one free copy available for one lucky reader, but I’ll get to that later!

Here she shares a little more about the process of writing and the importance of finding a supportive community on her journey towards publishing her latest work: Continue reading

Favourites of 2013

I’m sorry to inflict yet another best-of list on you but I figured it would be good for my swiss cheese memory to jot these down for posterity.

It’s been a year of many firsts: my first year of K-drama watching, of blogging, of tumblr-ing (is that a word?), and of meeting a lovely community of fellow drama obsessives (that means you!) which has been totally awesome.

I wish everyone lots of love, happiness and many more good dramas in 2014!

Favourites

These worked for me in all the ways that matter–heart, story, substance and execution–and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend every one of them. In no particular order: Continue reading

On Endings

[spoilers for Breaking Bad, The Master’s Sun and Two Weeks]

It’s been a transitional period for me in real life and naturally I’ve been thinking alot about transitions in dramaland as well. That in-between period of endings and beginnings, when you’re fishing around and sussing out new keepers is like being in drama limbo. Especially if you’re coming off a crack drama, you end up searching for your next fix in a kind of wandering funk.

Endings have such a huge impact on how you perceive a drama. A consistently good drama with a weak ending dulls the whole show and vice versa. The nature of the K-drama making machine ensures that we can expect a certain amount of unpredictability, which is why we always watch a drama’s home stretch with a combination of hope that the show won’t let you down, and fear that it could go off the rails at any moment.

So when three dramas I’ve enjoyed immensely–Two Weeks, The Master’s Sun, Breaking Bad (yes, I do still watch a few US shows)–ended really well last month I was overjoyed. And it also got me thinking about what makes a satisfying ending. Is it enough for it to be merely pleasurable? Or does it have to end meaningfully as well, offering closure and significance while staying true to the show’s vision?  Continue reading

Is SBS Shipping Gong Hyo Jin & So Ji Sub too?

Because what else explains title of the latest The Master’s Sun behind the scenes clip of the rooftop kiss on episode 12?

On the SBS site, it’s titled  [메이킹] 소지섭-공효진, 쉬지 않고 계속 키스만..이러다 사귈 듯 [주군의 태양] which translates to [MAKING] So Ji Sub – Gong Hyo Jin, non stop kisses… at this rate they might date [Master’s Sun] (translation by @gohgomah on Soompi forum). Continue reading

Calling Real Life Shippers: Gong Hyo Jin and So Ji Sub Fan Fiction to Whet Appetites [updated]

[Update: MyWebFoot’s fanfic was such a success that she’s expanded chapters into a full-fledged e-book! That Far Gone will be available on 31st January 2014! Read an except here.)

Master's Sun on set stills I first encountered fan fiction during the height of my fascination with The X-Files and my big fat crush on Fox Mulder. It led me to trawling internet message boards and fan sites, and  fan fiction seemed to me like a strange but wonderful beast borne from slightly unhinged minds.

Some of it was fun, alot of it bad fan-wank.  Nevertheless, the extent of my fandom practice has never strayed far from canon.  So imagine my surprise when I came across this TMS fan fic on Soompi forums that tickled me silly.

Webfoot Prints has been posting a set of fics called That Far Gone. It’s basically a series of snapshots of on-set encounters between So Ji Sub and Gong Hyo Jin while filming The Master’s Sun.  It’s written from SJS’s point of view, and quite cleverly appropriates what is widely acknowledged to be his introverted, gruff voice.
